Stop the Weight Gain Blame Game
More often than not, I hear people who are unhappy with their weight blaming the problem on outside forces. These excuses are usually completely valid. Maybe you grew up with unhealthy eating habits, or you feel like you don’t have a big enough budget for “healthy foods”. Perhaps your job is too demanding to take the time to eat right. Whatever the story is, I get it.
But I’m here to tell you that unless you stop the weight gain blame game and take control of your eating, the blame is going to continue to turn into extra lbs on your frame. The bottom line is that your health is THE MOST IMPORTANT factor in your life. Without good health, your livelihood, your work and your emotional well-being will be compromised.
So what I’m proposing is that you refocus the time and energy you are spending on the blame game and turn it into action items that will help you to shed extra weight. These 5 easy action items will help you to take control of your weight and start fresh in 2015.
ACTION 1. Every Sunday, cut up a week’s worth of veggies and fruits so you have healthy grab and go options in your refrigerator.
ACTION 2. Start eating off of your small plates. Portion control is where things can get out of control. It’s a simple formula; the smaller the plate, the less you eat.
ACTION 3. Replace bad carbs with good ones. Stay away from white pasta, bread, etc. Eat whole grains instead or go a step further and replace bad carbs with legumes (peas, beans, lentils, soybeans, etc).
ACTION 4. Reduce sugar wherever possible. Skip the sugary drinks and drink water or sparkling water instead and read your labels! There are so many hidden sugars in our foods – from yogurt to salad dressing. If you are going to consume sugar, do it knowingly, not accidentally.
ACTION 5. Find an exercise that makes your soul sing. Whatever it is that makes you smile – spinning, walking, jump rope, Cross Fit – find something you love and do it at a minimum of 3x/week. When you are doing something that makes you happy, you are more inclined to keep doing it.
